I believe this syncs to AD every 12 hours. But you can force it to sync by going to:

All Settings -> System -> Enterprise Integration -> Directory Services -> User -> Advanced -> Sync Attributes

I agree that it would be nice to have this sync automatically within AD.

Yes its a third party service app which does not start and needs to manually restarted on when the VM is up and running.

Is this a standard for services to be set up 'automatic' when dealing with intstant clone or VDI based VMs in general?

thanks for your reply.

Yes. You need to set the service to 'Automatic' on master image for whatever third party service you want to start automatically on VDI.

Re: The Operation on file .\PhysicalDrive2 failed

Hi RDPetruska,

FYI: Workstation takes care of unmounting physical disks/partitions and locking them for exclusive access.  The VM will not power on unless we succeed in obtaining exclusive access to any needed physical disks/partitions, and the exclusive access should make it impossible for anything else to manipulate the disks/partitions for as long as the VM is powered on, so it should be basically impossible for concurrent access to occur.

Thanks,

Following on, I've made the change and all looks ok. When I look in Devices > Lifecycle > Enrollment status, devices have re-synced but devices that are already enrolled, now just show as "Registered" under Enrollment status. Does this matter?

Basic Query - GPO Settings for DEM

$
0

I am new to DEM and have a very basic question.

I was reading Quick-Start Tutorial for User Environment Manager | VMware and what I understand is that we create an OU for desktops and link the UEM GPO to this OU and deploy all the desktops under this OU. How about the domain users, should they also be moved under this OU? I am confused by the fact that the DEM settings are primarily for users (and not computers) and it follows the user, but the documentation doesn't mention any GPOs for the users.

Could someone explain how this needs to be done?

Cool!

Since the error message "The operation on file ### failed" can occur for all sorts of different reasons (including failing hard disks), and there is a risk that folks might try to apply this fix to situations in which it will not help (and then this thread will be congested with angry replies saying "THIS DOESN'T FIX IT!") I will add some more explanation here to help folks who might find this thread in future...

In the vmware.log here, we have the following:

2020-04-27T11:00:44.928-05:00| vcpu-1| I125: AIOWIN32C: '\\.\PhysicalDrive2' : Failed to read: The parameter is incorrect (87).

2020-04-27T11:00:44.928-05:00| vmx| I125: VMXAIOMGR: Retry on read "\\.\PhysicalDrive2" : The parameter is incorrect.

2020-04-27T11:00:44.928-05:00| vmx| I125: VMXAIOMGR: system : err=570002 errCode=87 freeSpace=18446744073709551615

2020-04-27T11:00:44.928-05:00| vmx| I125: VMXAIOMGR: "\\.\PhysicalDrive2" : read s=71739411456 n=1024 ne=1, fai=0

2020-04-27T11:00:44.928-05:00| vmx| I125: VMXAIOMGR:             v[0]=242D38BA131:1024

The key part out of all of that gibberish is the error code, 87, which MSDN tells us is ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER which is described as "The parameter is incorrect".  This means we asked the Windows host OS to perform a disk I/O operation which it believes we should have not even asked of it... Basically, the host OS is slapping us on the wrist and telling us to please not do that again.  (Which we then do, several times, but oh well.)  The I/O request was most likely never even sent to the disk.

I've also highlighted three numerals on the last line, because that piece before the ":" tells us why the parameter was invalid... When opening a physical disk, we open it in "direct" mode (FILE_FLAG_NO_BUFFERING), which makes those I/Os about as fast as they can possibly be, but it also requires that our I/O requests be performed in a multiple of the disk's sector size, and in a memory buffer which is aligned to the sector size.  The line starting with v[0] gives the address and size of the I/O buffer we gave to the Windows host OS... The 1024 byte buffer size will be a multiple of the disk's logical sector size, so that's fine, but the address should end in [02468ace]00 if it is going to be sector-aligned.  It is not... it ends in 131.  The guest has asked us to perform I/O to an unaligned guest memory address, which is well within its right to do, but still is a rather odd thing to do... and we have passed that I/O to the host OS basically unchanged, but the host OS is not OK with the unaligned access, and that causes the failure.

So, to recap, where we are sending an unaligned I/O to the host OS (address ending in something other than 000, 200, 400, 600, 800, a00, c00 or e00, or length not a multiple of 512), and where the resulting errCode is 87, enabling bounce buffers is an appropriate fix: It will cause Workstation to reformulate the I/O in a slightly less-efficient way but which will ensure that it will meet the alignment requirements of the host OS.

There, more information than you ever needed or wanted to know about what happened here and why that fix worked.

Thanks,

Hi Vincent,

Yes, this can be performed provided you do not want to retain the changes performed on test recovered VM. Once you cleanup test recovery, test VM and data will be cleaned.

Ensure VR and SRM sites remain connected during test and test cleanup.

I hope that helps

This error has been resolved.  Its due to our vRA appliance not being patched!   This issue was resolved in HF3.

NullPointerException occurs when generating Custom Form designer elements for BP, if the blueprint uses property definitions which have a null as a parameter to External Source. In Custom Forms designer, the component tree is not loading. Issue is resolved if the said Property Definitions are removed from the BP.HF3

I have found the affected property and fixed the issue.

Can't access any of my VMs after exiting VMWARE Workstation Pro 15.5.2

$

I'm honestly not sure what happened.  A couple days ago I built my vmware environment, which included 3 Windows servers, an Ubuntu server, and a Kali LINUX server.  All of the VMs were open horizontally within my workstation app and functional.  I clicked on the Workstation Icon in my task bar and noticed that each server had its own window.  I decided to close the two linux servers and after that I could no longer access these linux servers or get them to come back up where I could see their console.     Somewhere along the line I also exited Workstation Pro and said not to exit the VMs.    I just shut all of the vms down and now when I'm in Workstation Pro I can't access any of them.  I also can't edit their settings any longer.  I'm not sure what I've done to break this.  Here's a couple of screen shots.  I honestly have no idea what I've done to cause this.  The only thing I haven't done is restart the machine, which of course, I will do now.  :-)  I just restarted my computer and that hasn't made a difference.  Based on what I'm seeing, none of the VMs I created a few days ago and some I even used today, seem to be available to me to use.   I am new to this version of VMWare Workstation, but not new to VMWare.   I've not seen this before.  Please advise.

Re: Jamf Setup and Reset Apps to Ease Apple Device Management Chores

$

Hi Robert,

I'm quite familiar with 'staging' at both my previous and current positions. The challenge arises in response to COVID-19 which requires us to get the maximum usage from a limited number of shared devices such as iPads to be used by various caregivers and patients.

Similar to Jamf Setup, a simple use-case could be that a single iPad is used by the nurse most of the time to monitor a patient's vital signs through a specific app or apps. A doctor may then require the use of the same iPad during his/her brief visit with the patient to review/update the medical record through an EMR app. At some point, the patient may want to use the same iPad to contact loved ones remotely with Facetime, WhatsApp, etc. Requiring a user login to switch between different profiles is not feasible.

There's still so little information on Shared iPad for ABM. Can this serve the use-case described above?

I appreciate the info on integrating WS1 with Epic. However, Jamf Reset will serve well for the use-case above.

Best,

Tom

Thanks for answering all my remedial questions guys, however, I have decided to wait a little while before I start making changes like this. One of the admins I work with has been here 15 years, and has a very different mindset than I do. I won't go in-depth but he has an 80% completion rule, which I'm betting you can guess what that means. After I get a better feel for things I will start doing things like this. I appreciate the help and I will remember to update with my results when I can.

That said, I have one semi-unrelated question, if this is against the rules, my apologies and don't bother answering. Basically I'm wondering how safe it is to put a single host in a cluster of 9 into maintenance mode (which as I understand it, will then move all the machines to another host since vmotion is on) and then reboot that host. As long as I do it one at a time and give it plenty of time to do its thing, I should be ok correct?

By reading this article, I think I am able to install vSAN Witness Appliance in an ESXi by iteself.

So suppose I have:

Old servers:   Server 1, Server 2  -> One vSAN Disk group, one disk for logging and running vSAN Witness Appliance for new servers

New servers:  Server 3, Server 4 -> One vSAN Disk group, one disk for logging and running vSAN Witness Appliance for old servers

Wouldn't this work? Or it is not official supported?! It isn't that I do not want to power up the broken server, but let's try to be more friendly to the environment

Re: ESXi 6.0, and using QNAP for snapshots storage

$

Yes  a greyed out vDisks size field is always an strong indicator that the vDisk is running on an snapshot. You have to look to he vmdk filename to be 100% sure because when using SATA controller for the VM its also greyed out when the VM is on. So check the filename.

For deleting a Snapshot you need free space!   How much depends on ESXi version and of course the size of the snapshot.  Please run  ls -lisa  and df -h from the command line.

Joerg

@ j_dubs

Thanks for your reply.

The use case is as you  guessed.

I want to allow users within Project to select ServerType. The case is that for single ServerType there might be many available networks (for example for ApplicationServerType there might be two networks: APP1 network and APP2 network). So after user selects ServerType from custom form dropdown field, the Network dropdown should update its items to match networks available for this specific ServerType.

I have achieved such behaviour by writing vRO action that takes ServerType and Project as an input parameters and returns array of network tags. Unfortunatly mapping between [project, serverType] -> [network:tag1, network:tag2, ...] is embedded into code. I don't know (for now) how to retrieve networks assigned to project by network constraints.

It would be very nice if somebody could share some code to retrieve Networks available for Project. Unless there is some simpler solution...

VCSA 7 connectivity issues with vSAN and vSphere HA

$

I have 3x identical Supermicro machines each with 8c/16t, 64GB ram, 512GB ESXi Drive, 1TB NVME Cache Drive, 6.4TB NVME Capacity drive. The is a very simple setup for my homelab on 1 switch with 2 VLANs.

I just installed esxi 7 on all three machines with the management interface in a vlan. It pulls the proper IP address from the static DHCP server.

I then installed VCSA 7 from the UI installer on windows.

I turned on vMotion and vSAN, I added the 2x other hosts to make it so all three are online. I set static address on a new vnic for vMotion and vSAN.

After the system was running fairly stable for a few hours I went to create a new vm and the VCSA interface seems slow.

As you can see it looks like there was an attempt to migrate the VCSA vm and failed but I don't know why.

Please let me know where to pull more logs that would help to troubleshoot this issue.

Hi

Can you please share a screenshot of your VCSA settings?

And please be sure that there is no IP conflict, once we had the same problem, but not with "No Compatible Network Adapter" error, we could ping our VCSA IP address but we could not connect to the web interface, so by checking ARP we found out that we are connecting to a wrong MAC address, so we traced that MAC and found the problem.

I see all Parent and Respective child folders are unique, so just a folder name should work fine.

Will prefer just folder name - something with below workflow for exclusion would be great:

1. If Folder Name is a Parent, exclude child as well.

2. If Folder Name is Child, applicable only to that folder.

Re: vsan infra upgrade

Hi, thanks for your valuable suggestion and now I’m ready for upgrade of vSAN Infra.

I have one query about HW compatibility since we have C240-M4SX servers and having  Cisco 12G SAS Modular Raid Controller(UCSC-MRAID12G) which is supported matrix from Cisco and Vmware /VSAN HCL for ESXi 6.7 U2 and  vSAN 6.7 U2

As  we are not using vSAN ready node, so  while checking HW compatibility, found strange thing about Cisco 12G SAS Modular Raid Controller ( since I targeted upgrade from 6.0 U2 to 6.7 U2,but I looked 6.7 U3 compatibility ) that as per vSAN HCL,RAID controller(UCSC-MRAID12G)  is supported till ESXi 7.0/vSAN7.0,however when  I checked Footnotes  for vSAN 6.7 U3 stating  that“Firmware 4.620.00-7322 is packaged within container 24.12.1-0433.Please use one of the following UCS releases for Storage controller firmware & Driver - UCS C-series Standalone releases – 4.0(2d) , UCSM-Managed C series releases – 4.0(2d)”

But as per Cisco compatibility Matrix,6.7 U3 does not support UCSC-MRAID12G controller for firmware version 4.0(2d),but Vmware Matrix says that use 4.0(2d) for ESXi6.7 U3/vSAN6.7 U3

So quite confused H/W compatibility   of vSAN HCL/Cisco HCL, So should it safe/supported  to  run vSAN 6.7 U3 on C240-M4SX with 4.0(2d) as per vSAN HCL ?
